Black History Month

February 1, 2024

This February, as we observe Black History and Black Futures Month, we are reminded not only of the significant historical contributions of Black Ontarians but also of the bright futures we are building together. Our province’s story is enriched by the resilience, creativity, and leadership of its Black communities from the past and into the future.

  • We reflect on the courage of those who journeyed to freedom via the Underground Railroad, creating thriving settlements like the one in Dresden, Ontario, and leaving a legacy of bravery and determination.
  • We draw inspiration from historical figures like Lincoln Alexander, Ontario’s first Black Member of Provincial Parliament and Lieutenant Governor, whose leadership paved the way for future generations.
  • We celebrate the innovation and creativity of Black Ontarians in technology, arts, education, and public service, who continue to break barriers and shape our province’s future.
  • We look forward to a future where diversity is not just acknowledged but embraced, creating a more inclusive, equitable, and vibrant Ontario for all.

This Black History and Black Futures Month, let’s honour our collective history, empower the voices shaping our today, and work together for a future enriched by the diverse talents and dreams within Ontario’s Black communities. #blackhistorymonth#blackfuturesmonth
