Garrett’s Legacy Act Debate
I am honoured to carry the torch for Todd Smith and Stan Cho to bring the Garrett’s Legacy Act to completion, named after 15-year-old Garrett Mills, who tragically died after a movable soccer goal fell on him. This bill is close to my heart because I, too, have experienced the pain of losing a child. Garrett’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of movable soccer goals, which have been responsible for the deaths of over 40 people in North America, most of whom were children.
I am thankful that this bill has received support from all sides of the legislature. It is a common-sense piece of legislation that will establish requirements for the safe usage of movable soccer goals used by members of the public. As a parent and grandparent, I know that we must take every precaution to ensure the safety of our children.
I hope the passage of Garrett’s Legacy Act will prevent other parents from experiencing the pain that Garrett’s family has felt. The memory of Garrett will live on through this legislation, and his legacy will be one of safety and prevention.
