Today, we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, honouring the 14 women whose lives were stolen at L’École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989.
Thirty-six years later, we remember their names, their families, and the communities forever changed by an act of hatred and gender-based violence. And we recommit ourselves to the work that must continue.
Gender-based violence is not a tragedy of the past — it remains a reality for too many women, girls, and gender-diverse people across Ontario. The Ontario Government has heard firsthand from survivors, frontline service providers, and advocates who are calling for stronger protections and safer communities. Their voices guide the work we do.
As we remember the young women who were killed simply for being women studying engineering, let us also recommit ourselves to action: to listen, to believe survivors, to support prevention, and to work toward an Ontario where all people can live free from violence.
We remember today — and we continue the work tomorrow.
